5 Skincare Mistakes I Didn't Know I Was Making

I've only just started learning about skincare and makeup (yes, I'm a late bloomer). During my board review, my break time from reading books was spent reading articles on anti-aging and pore-refining. Not only did I grasp the concept of glomerulotubular balance vs. tubuloglomerular feedback; I finally understood what my mom meant when she would say she was beginning her "nightly ceremony." As I browsed through countless articles (Flipboard is such an enabler), I realized I wasn't doing enough to protect my skin from nature's onslaught -- and many of things I was doing, I was doing wrong. Here are some of the mistakes I didn't know I was making.

  1. Banishing an oily face with powder instead of oil control film

You know when in the middle of the day, you spot yourself in the mirror and eww you're quite shiny? I used to reach for my In2It Oil Control and Oil-Free 2-way Powder Foundation to cover those oily spots. Now I know that I should use blotting film to remove the oil. Piling on powder will just make my face look cakey. I like using Clean & Clear Oil Control Film because it gives me a semi-matte/dewy finish, and often I don't even need to retouch with powder!

  2. Using a moisturizer with SPF at night

I used to use Khiel's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, a gift from Frances and Faith, at night. I would actually skip moisturizer in the morning and just apply it before bed. Big mistake! Using SPF at night can lead to clogged pores. The reason there are separate moisturizers for day time and night time is because our skin needs sun protection in the day, while at night moisture is key, especially if we sleep with airconditioning on. Now I use Khiel's in the morning (when I remember, hehe) and at night -- depending on how much moisture I need or if I'm breaking out -- Pond's Flawless White Ultra Luminous Serum, Nivea Baby Smoothy Cream, or Human Nature Sunflower Beauty Oil.

  3. Applying eye cream before applying moisturizer

The ingredients in moisturizers can inactivate the active "age-defying" ingredients in eye cream. So it's better to apply moisturizer first, give it a few minutes to sink in, and then apply eye cream. I've only tried L'Oreal Revitalift Eye Cream on a regular basis.

  4. Applying eye cream in the morning

I am sooo conscious of my eyebags, I used to apply my L'Oreal Revitalift Eye Cream with Pro-Retinol A in the day time as well as at night! This is a big booboo because retinol sensitizes skin to sunlight, possibly leading to redness and peeling -- the opposite of what I want my eye cream to achieve. (I'm not sure why L'Oreal recommends applying it both in the day and at night.) Overuse can lead to the same, so I use it at only thrice a week.

  5. Ignoring my neck and hands

They say you can tell a woman's age by the appearance of her neck -- saggy or firm. The neck is often missed during the application of makeup and skincare products, leading to ghost face and turkey neck. What goes on our face should also be applied to our neck.

Same deal for hands. My grandmother often recalls how smooth her hands used to be. So use a mild hand soap and don't forget to pamper those paws. You don't have to spring for a fancy hand cream, you can use whatever lotion or even a very thin layer petroleum jelly for your hands.

What skincare mistakes have you been guilty of making?

    1. It's more convenient kasi!

I'm one the lookout for a new (cheaper) daytime moisturizer with SPF. Do you have any recommendations?

  2. Haha, I don't like using powder because it feels heavy so I usually use oil film. I'm currently using the one from Kleenex (the purple one with the pretty pattern).

My moisturizer does not have SPF so it's ok that I use it at night, I guess. I love Kiehl's stuff even though they're expensive. For the last few months, though, I've been using Pond's cold cream at night for cleaning and moisturizing my face. It's so easy to use!

And totally agree on the neck thing. I've seen this mistake on so many Filipino women - super white face ala-geisha. I usually apply BB cream and foundation up to my neck so I don't look weird.

    1. Urgh the internets ate my very long response. Anyway, here's what I remember I typed:

You have really good skin! Faith too, really clear. You guys never look sweaty, just...glowing. Strange, it's the opposite for me: BB feels heavier. But I *am* using one of the heavier BB's, Etude House Precious Mineral Sun BB. What are you using?

Even if it doesn't have SPF, I sometimes use Smoothy Cream in the day. It just smells so good! Do you use facial wash after removing makeup with Pond's cold cream, or do you think it does the job well enough?

My face and neck are different colors! Huhu. I hate having to remove makeup from my neck. Such a hassle.

By the way man, do you receive email notifications when I reply to your comments? I'm considering installing Disqus because it offers email notifications even to non-Blogger users. But I hesitate because it's slow to load.

    2. Eep, very late response (hehe I don't get email notifications for responses to my comments btw).

I use BB cream from Etude House, too. Atchie got it for me so I am not sure what kind it is specifically. You might want to try the darker tint of BB Cream if your face tends to come out a different color compared to your neck.

I have only really tried removing makeup using Pond's cold cream a few times and it usually does the trick. I don't wear makeup as much anymore because I am teh lazy, but after applying cold cream I just wipe it off and rinse my face with water and I am done!

But if you feel icky about just using the cold cream maybe you can use some makeup remover (esp for eye makeup) first and then use cold cream afterwards. It leaves your face moisturized kasi so no need for night moisturizer.
