When I still had the time, I used to send holiday postcards to anyone who wanted one. That kind of died out around the second year of med school. This year some Filipino bloggers have been hosting mail swaps, and my hands were itching to get crafty so I joined a few.
Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao (8 pcs.) - Php 188
Had merienda with some of the family at the newly-opened Lugang Cafe at SM The Block. My sister and I ordered for everyone, and we chose dishes the way we always do: look at the pictures on the menu and get the ones that look delicious. This turned out to be difficult because the Lugang menus are well-designed and everything looks yummy! We ended up ordering more than we could finish. If you're a restaurant owner you better have a good-looking menu, I tell you.
Of course we got Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao (pictured above). It was all right, a bit lacking in soup and in flavor. Shi Lin's is better. Lugang does have more variety in their XLB though.

Self-portraiture, a gorgeous coat, and lots of DIY inside. Let's start with:
Photography and the Arts
How Dave McKean put together those Sandman trade paperback collage covers. I always assumed he did it but cutting and pasting photographs. Turns out, he actually made 3-dimensional collages/dioramas, photographed them, then sent the transparencies to DC comics. Unreal! MUST SEE!Amazing children's books illustrations at The Children’s Theater of the Absurd.
Brilliantly vibrant colors and styling on the Doors and Windows of Nepal by Mansy.
Practical advice on taking self-portraits -- something most bloggers will find useful!
Folksy music + morbid lyrics + cutesy animation = great PSA! Dumb Ways to Die by Tangerine Kitty and Metro Trains.
Whew, I haven't done one of these in a long time! For those who aren't familiar with my ~*review process*~, I don't actually review movies as much as make really random comments and often vague references. ;) Here goes.
I didn't even know the Rurouni Kenshin live action film had been cast, let alone scheduled for release, until I saw it among a list of movies opening this week in Manila. That was a VERY pleasant surprise.
I don't know the anime as well as some of my friends do, but I wanted to watch it because the franchise brings to mind fond memories of coming home from high school, plunking down for merienda in the front of the TV, and watching Samurai X on AXN (yes, the one dubbed in English OHNOES), and later, on Animax or Hero (original Japanese with subtitles).
I didn't watch the entire anime, or any of the OVAs, so I don't know how faithful this adaptation is to the anime or the manga. Just that it has the perfect Kenshin! ^_^ It stands on its own as an evenly-paced action drama with gorgeous cinematography. I would watch it again just for the fight sequences! Note that only SM Cinemas are showing the film. Random and possibly spoilery comments and picspam after the jump.

I just heard about this and it's such great news, I had to write about it immediately. I've reviewed Snapseed before on my old blog. Basically it's a simple yet powerful mobile photo editing app. (There's a desktop version as well, but I have Photoshop for that.) I got Snapseed back when it was an App Store App of the Week and free for a limited time. (Otherwise, $5 for an app no thanks.) Now it's come to Android and is free for all!
Snapseed totally changes your ~iPhoneography~ experience. Global adjustments, sharpening, even color correction and fully customizable filters, it can handle them all. It's kind of impossible to make a bad picture with this app. Here are some before-and-after gifs. (Bear in mind that since these are gifs, there is some loss of quality.)

Above: A failed microwave brownie-in-a-mug. I'm trying out other recipes, hopefully they'll turn out yummier.
I LOVE stumbling upon new blogs! When I first started making websites 14 years ago, and up until 5 years ago, majority of the people I was interacting with online were from other countries. Which was great, because I made a lot of friends and penpals. But this year I've been discovering Filipino blogs, and I find them pretty amazing! Also I can ask them stuff like "where did you get that pretty paper" and "are you going to this-and-this event." Here are some of the new people I've found.

My good friend Frances got married two months ago, and not only did she plan the wedding herself, but she also designed, printed, and enveloped all the wedding printables! Such an achievement because she's a full-time working woman with a desk job. You can see her process at their website: JS + Frances. Check out some of her work below.
